Books downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions can be transferred to iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch as well as Android devices

Major News : Books downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions can be transferred to iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch as well as Android devices.

AS you know currently it was thought not possible to transfer Adobe DRM protected ebooks that you have downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions on your computer to Apple devices although it is possible with a number of other ebook readers such as the Sony Pocket and Touch ebook readers, Kobo etc. and numerous others as fully listed at http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/supported-devices.

However the procedure demonstrated at the NetLibrary ebooks Seminar I attended this morning (12 October 2010) showed that it is possible.

Scott Wasinger from EBSCO Publishing outlined the process when he discussed NetLibrary – an ebook aggregator platform EBSCO Publishing purchased in March this year from OCLC.

(Just like you can with EBL ebooks with NetLibrary there is an option to download ebooks (protected with Adobe DRM) to Adobe Digital Editions on your computer.

He then showed with the procedure below how those downloaded ebooks could be transferred to Apple devices such as the iPad and iPhone from Adobe Digital Editions.)

I admit the procedure is a little clunky but once set-up it would take no time at all and is a major plus for putting forward the Apple devices (more specifically the iPad) as perhaps the most appropriate ebook reader suitable to access QUT Library’s collection of ebooks.

I have been through it and it works fine.

Follow the procedure below.

Go to http://txtr.com/ (Germany company who are working with Adobe to make a way for Adobe DRM protected ebooks to be transferred to Apple and Android devices).

(Note the process will continue to be refined as textr work with Adobe in coming months.)

Sign up for a free txtr account.

Download an ebook (for example an EBL ebook) to Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer.

Login to your txtr account, select the ME option and then select Upload texts at the bottom of the Private Texts box.

A window will come up asking you to select a file to upload to txtr.com.

Navigate to your My Digital Editions folder on your computer. If using Windows XP it will be located at C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Digital Editions\

If using Windows Vista or Windows 7 it will be located at C:\Users\username\Documents\My Digital Editions\

Select the PDF or ePub file for the book you want to upload to txtr.com. The book will then upload to txtr.com and appear in your Private Texts box.

Go to the App Store and download the free txtr app to your iPad or mobile device.

Open the txtr app on your iPad or mobile device. Go to Settings and then Login with your txtr username and password.

Secondly select the AdobeID option (that will say not activated) and enter in your Adobe ID to activate your Adobe ID.

Then on your mobile device go to Library and select Private Texts and any ebooks you have uploaded to txtr.com now appear here.

Select the ebook and then select the Download button and the book is now downloaded to the mobile device or iPad and available for reading.

Be aware that although not tested I believe that the book will no longer be able to be read on your iPad or mobile device once the loan length you choose just before you download to Adobe Digital Editions has expired.

Appears to be good advice but once followed items in txtr app that have been borrowed from Public Library via Adobe Digital Editions still come up with Item not able to be opened or read message.

I followed the instructions for downloading and downloaded both epub and pdf format books, but couldn’t open either on my Ipad. What did I do wrong?

This morning I went to the txtr website on my IPad using Safari. I tried to open the downloaded EPUB book, but it said there was an error on page 1 and wouldn’t open it. In going back to txtr on my notebook computer, it opened the EPUB book in Abode Digital Editions rather than in txtr. Any thoughts?

You need to download the txtr app on the ipad. That is different from going to txtr in Safari. For me this works only with drm protected epub books that are not from the library. What is my error?

Nope, I can’t open it either. I almost got excited to open it. I wonder if it will let me open the doc from a different source other than the library site. hummm… I’ll try it and post again

I thought this was going to work. I did all the steps above and transferred my library book from Adobe Digital Media. But when I hit “read” on the iPhone, I get a “Document can not be opened” message. Sure hope this gets worked out!

Thanks!! This worked perfectly to transfer books purchased from the Sony Store to an Android 2.2 device (Samsung Tab). The txtr reader is excellent.

Same here. I think it may have to do with the fact that the ADE file I’m trying to open is from my library, which means it’s an encrypted file.

I just found an option that works on my iphone but is only practical on the iPAD:

I downloaded a book from mediaondemand.org (a site run by libraries, so I’m essentially borrowing the book) to my Mac and tried to open it in txtr on my iPhone and it won’t work. I followed the directions exactly but it said “document can’t be opened”. Help! Why won’t this work?

So I just discovered that you can now download ePub books from mediaondemand.org to your iPhone via Overdrive media player app. You need an Adobe ID but that takes 2 seconds to set up. Works great. Txtr, not so much. Sorry.

I found that I had to click on the Private Texts link and then upload EPUBs from that screen. I also had to use the Synchronizer function to upload my netlibrary (PDFs) books. I’ve been able to read both kinds of books on my iPod Touch. Thanks so much for posting this!

Can you tell me where the “synchronizer” function is? I’ve installed txtr on both my computer and my Android phone, uploaded a book to private texts, logged in to both txtr and Adobe ID, but there is nothing in my Android library even though I have one in my lib online. What am I missing?

I had tried numerous methods to transfer my ebooks from Sony Ereader to my ipod. No luck until I transferred them to my Adobe Digital Edition and then followed your instructions to transfer them to my ipod. Worked great. Thanks for the clear instructions.

Many thanks for this, Adobe Digital Editions works absolutely fine with my iPhone 4. The whole process from setting up account on txtr to importing book took less than 10 mins – I already had an Adobe Digital Editions account.

Works extremely well on my Garmin A50 android. It took a few minutes to set up & is easy to use too :)
I had a message saying download cancelled, although it still opened on my device, even without an internet connection.

I tried this for an ePub I bought from GoogleBooks, wanting to read it on my Archos70 Android tablet. I got as far as downloading the book from within the txtr app on the table, but when I hit the Read button it said “Unable to read document”. Any ideas?

    Hi there
Followed all the steps successfully and uploaded the “Programming in Objective-C 2.0″ Digital Editions ver of the the PDF. I then successufuly download from the txtr library to my iPhone 4 and presto there it was but alas when I opened in txtr I got
// Could Not Load Document there was a problem loading the document // error msg.

Any ideas besides lugging around the macbookpro?

I feel I was duped when I bought this book from Ebooks because of the absurd process I needed to go through just to read it on the mac. On top of the when the one looked at the format choice there was no disclosure explaining the ridiculous rigmarole needed to start reading the PAID for ebook!

I am trying to use the txtr ‘bridge’ to allow myself to read my aDOBE digital books on my new iPad…. could you please expound on what the ME option is within the txtr site? I cannot find it, and, therefore, cannot proceed with the outlined process that you were so kind to instruct us with.

bogus. Doesnt work – when viewing a Adobe Digital edition complains that file cant be opened as its password protected.

use Aldiko to view DRM protected Adobe digital editions on android , works beautifully once you’ve authorised your computer :-)

    Rubbish!!!
I’ve tried every procedure available. I bought an ebook based on this advice and NO it doesn’t work on iPhone 4 with any reader. Whether or not it is the publisher or the device I’m stranded and out of pocket.
BEWARE erroneous advice as is often prevalent when FREE!

thanks for the step by step instruction but my files are greater than 20MB, which is the maximum file size Txtr allows. So I’m screwed
Do you know anyway to get around that?

I have been following your instructions and it has gone well so far but have gotten to the step: “Then on your mobile device go to Library and select Private Texts. I don’t know where the library is. I am using an iPad as my mobile device. Is the library here somewhere? Can you tell me where the library is? Thanks

A very simple solution (worked with my android device):
    1. copy your DRM adobe book (for windows 7: C: program files – Adobe – Adobe Digital Editions- your book) to your device.
    2. Download Libri.de (eBookS Reader) from the android market: language is German but easy to use through icons.
    3. Open eBookS Reader : tap the icon (info) on the bottom right = this will allow you to add your Adobe ID.
    4. Go to your book on your device & choose open with eBookS Reader & it will be added to your library there.
    5. eBookS Reader is far better than textr as it enables reading & adding bookmarks. Zooming is far better as well.
