If QUT Library doesn’t have it, how can I get it?

Remember if we don’t have a book or a journal article or a thesis or a conference paper in the QUT collection then we can borrow it for you (if you’re a staff or postgraduate student).

EBL ebooks now available on iPhone and iPod Touch

24/03/2009 Leave a comment

EBL have recently announced that EBL titles can be downloaded to the Sony Reader, but EBL’s new reader is already accessible on an iPhone and iPod Touch?

Patrons can access EBL titles on their iPhone or iPod Touch through the normal webpages.

The image view in the reader will render the full book. Scrolling works by using two fingers. EBL areplanning to offer a scaled down view more suitable for mobile access later this year.

And news just in… downloading EBL ebooks to the iPhone/iPod Touch is soon to follow. Adobe have just announced a partnership with Stanza Reader, the reader application designed for the iPhone that will allow iPhone users to download EBL ebooks.

No Brief Candle: Reconceiving Research Libraries for the 21st Century

Something for the library students & those interested in libraries & research:
http://www.clir.org/pubs/reports/pub142/pub142.pdf

In the winter of 2008, the Council on Library and Information Services (CLIR) convened a group of 25 leading librarians, publishers, faculty members, and information technology specialists to look into the following question: “How should we be rethinking the research library in a swiftly changing information landscape?”

There are articles from “Future of the Library in the Research University” to “Role of the Library in 21st Century Scholarly Publishing” and “How to Change Faculty Perceptions
of Librarians and Ensure the Future of the Research Library”

QUT Library achieves high ratings in LibQUAL+ survey

22/12/2008 Leave a comment

QUT’s undergraduate and postgraduate students have responded very positively to the 2008 LibQUAL+ client survey, indicating high levels of satisfaction with QUT Library’s services.
This survey, led by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in North America, has been designed to measure library service quality and identify best practice.

The LibQUAL+ client survey focused on three key areas of service : information resources, library spaces, and library staff.
Students were asked to indicate their minimum and desired levels of service, as well as their perceived level of the Library’s current performance.

The survey results indicate slight improvement overall in student satisfaction with QUT Library’s performance since 2005, when the survey was last conducted. Particular improvement was noted in the Library’s information resources, the service area rated as most important by students. QUT Library has worked hard to improve its collection through strategies including ebook purchasing and electronic backsets of journals.

The service provided by QUT Library staff consistently rates highly in Library client surveys, and the 2008 LibQUAL+ survey is no exception. In particular, Library staff were rated as being highly courteous and ready to respond to users’ enquiries. While the results are an excellent outcome for QUT Library and for QUT, the Library recognises that there is still room for improvement, and will continue using client feedback to guide its future planning.

Emma goes to LIANZA!

31/10/2008 Leave a comment

I’m just about to head off to the LIANZA (Library & Information Association New Zealand Aotearoa) Conference in Auckland … yay!!!

This is all quite exciting as I’ve never been to NZ before & will get a day to play before it starts on Sunday (how very industrious!) and also because it has been awhile since I’ve been to a conference & even longer since I went to a library specific conference. These I alway find inspiring & interesting.

I hope also to visit a couple of uni libraries while there AUT & Uni Auckland so it’ll be interesting to compare & contrast.

I will attempt to get to a computer & blog the experience, but I’ll certainly report back on my return.

So I’ll be away until next Friday but will attempt to check email regularly & my diary is open & I do recommend you Ask a Librarian in the first instance: http://www.library.qut.edu.au/help/ask.jsp

eBook feedback needed

30/10/2008 Leave a comment

Thank you very much for all that feedback but more is always welcome!
The library is looking for me to provide some feedback from the IT faculty on eBooks. I’d really appreciate some comments & thoughts on them as the client perspective is important.

eBooks are a significant investment & we see them as another medium by which to provide information. Be aware that if requested I will always buy a print copy of any eBook.

Over the past year we’ve been using an EBL rental scheme – adding many new eBooks to the catalogue which we borrow on your behalf when they are requested, and after a certain number of requests they are automatically purchased. This greatly enlarges our collection available but does come at a price.

So do you use eBooks?

Do you find them functional & useful?

Do you prefer print or electronic access?

Have you had any issues or challenges in their use?

What do you like about eBooks?

Any thoughts, suggestions, comments, questions & ideas would be valuable feedback. If you prefer to remain anonymous, please let me know.

Remember you can search for eBooks specifically here: http://www.library.qut.edu.au/find/books.jsp or via the catalogue.
