DEST replaced by DIISR and DEWR

10/04/2008 Leave a comment

Universities will need to deal with both Departments as funding will come from both sources.

These changes will impact on the terminology used locally. For example, the annual “DEST Collection” will now be known by its real name; the Higher Education Research Data Collection or HERDC (pronounced HERDSEE or HERDEC). So if you hear these acronyms being bandied about, you will know what they are talking about. The Library and the Office of Research are continuing to plan for ways to integrate the eprint deposit process with the process for reporting publications for the HERDC. Publications information should only need to be supplied once (by the author) and used many times within the University.

Son of RQF
On February 26th, a media release from the new Minister for Innovation Industry Science and Research (Kim Carr) announced that the RQF would be replaced by a new evaluation system called ERA – Excellence in Research for Australia.

ERA will be more metrics-based than the RQF. The first assessment will be limited to the biological and life sciences, as these fields are served well by the existing metrics.

Consultation will continue (between DIISR and Universities) to identify appropriate metrics and measures for other disciplines.
